Äkäslompolo – Palojärvi – Karesuvanto – Sonkamuotka – Äkäslompolo wilderness route on snowmobiles
A three-day tour where we cruise through the varying snowy landscapes of Lapland: from endless pine forests to vast frozen swamps, treeless highlands and ice-covered lakes and rivers.
Are you dreaming of air breeze on your face while driving through an open fell scenery? How about beautiful forest trails or breathtaking Northern lights? If you do, this unique snowmobile expedition in Lapland is something you should try.
This tour consists of three days of snowmobiling in variable terrain (~300 km), phenomenal landscapes and endless wilderness. We provide all needed equipment and appropriate vehicles for long distance snowmobiling. All nights are spent in the comfort of simple cabins in the middle or at the edge of some of Europe’s last remaining wildernesses.
Route description – Forests, lakes, swamps and fells
We start the tour from Äkäslompolo and head to the trail North, towards Muonio, and further on, all the way close to the Norwegian border in Palojärvi, Enontekiö. The day starts in dense spruce and pine forests, occasionally cruising on frozen lakes, rivers and swamps. The trail continues more North, reaching the Northern treeline, ending up on the open fell highlands. We enjoy dinner and stay the night in cozy log cabins by a frozen lake area.
The second day is spent mainly in breathtaking rugged fell sceneries. Half way through the day, in Kaaresuvanto (Garasavvon in Sami) we pop into the Swedish side of the massive, free-flowing border river Muonionjoki - the valley of which we follow the rest of the day spending the night in another cabin close to the river valley.
The final day is all about admiring the forest and river sceneries of Western Lapland: we drive back towards the starting point in Äkäslompolo through varying, more and more commonly used snowmobile trails.
Itinerary & Dates
Day 1: Äkäslompolo to Palojärvi, accommodation initially in cabins of Galdotieva. Cabins are equipped with electricity, water and a sauna opportunity.
Day 2: Through Tarvantovaara Wilderness area to Kaaresuvanto and on to Sonkamuotka or Yli-Muonio. Again the cabins are equipped with electricity, water and a sauna opportunity.
Day 3: From Sonkamuotka / Yli-Muonio back to Äkäslompolo.

NOTE!
Long-distance driving in remote locations tests our capability to stay focused and maintain the phase of driving. Weather is a factor that needs to be kept in mind while exploring wilderness, as it may vary heavily within just a few moments. Due to these factors this is a true expedition that requires good health and stamina from the participants. Changes in route choices may also be done due to the conditions.

A four-day / three-night version is also possible, where we continue the journey with an additional 150 km even more North than in the shorter alternative.

Booking terms
Everyone is responsible for their own insurance cover.
A 20% deposit is to be paid when booking the trip. The rest is to be paid 30 days prior to the start. Free cancellations until 30 days prior to arrival. 50% refund, if cancelled 14-30 days before the start of the tour.
In case the tour is cancelled due to not reaching the minimum no. of participants, we do not refund the travelling costs you may already have purchased to get to / from Äkäslompolo. If the minimum number is not reached, it may be possible to arrange the tour with an additional cost.
